ArsenalgoalkeeperWojciech Szczesnyis being scapegoated for the repeated mistakes of those playing in front him, says his furious father.
The Pole was widely criticised for his display against Southampton on New Year's Day, in which he contributed to both Saints goals in a 2-0 defeat and risked more, but Maciej Szczesny argues that the likes of Per Mertesacker – who "showed the agility of a rhinoceros" – are more to blame.
Goalunderstands that the keeper has since earned the ire of manager Arsene Wenger for being caught smoking in the players' showers after the loss and is set to be fined £20,000, butSzczesny senior is adamant that the transgression has been invented by the media.
"What the British papers wrote about my son smoking under the shower after Southampton game, this is bullsh*t," he toldPrzeglad Sportowy.
"It doesn't surprise me as they are known for making stuff up. I have heard Wojciech smokes sometimes but he's not that stupid to smoke in the dressing room.
"He made a mistake for the first Southampton goal, coming too far from the goal, but please look at the Arsenal defence. How these guys areplaying is a disaster but, for some reason, nobody pays any attention to it."
Laurent Koscielny should immediately have runback to protect Wojciech and Per Mertesacker should have stood in the goal.
Unfortunately they did not do that and gave him zero support and, in that situation, Mertesacker showed the agility of a rhinoceros.
"Wojciech is often paying for it their mistakes and that he really cares. He needs someone who will critically analyse every game with him but also remain positive."
Someone should support him but the coachingstaff at Arsenal are not doing that; meanwhile the entire defence this season is an embarrassment."
